Flower Fun

I am a
Canna

What Flower
Are You?

"You stand up for what you believe in, even if it gets in the way of what other people think. You are proud of yourself and your accomplishments and you enjoy letting people know that."

This does not fit me at all. Weird.

Best Stuff EVER!!!!!

You can find this in your local Target for about $4.29. If you can't find it at a store, you can get it online at http://www.bearnaked.com/.

They didn't ask me to endorse this product (believe me, I don't get enough hits to warrant endorsements). I just love this stuff.

There are other flavors, but this is the only one I've tried so far.

Good stuff.

I want to try the blueberry and nut flavored one next.

Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Green

When I was born, I was born with navy blue eyes (or so my mom tells me). They quickly turned to mud brown and stayed that way until I was about 10. They got a bit lighter and turned what I call hazel. They continued to stay that way until I was a teenager.

I got glasses when I was 14 and when I was 16, I actually managed to talk my mom not only into contacts, but colored contacts. I wanted green eyes so bad. Except for the fact that the green contacts were a little off putting, they went well with my hair color and skin tone. I loved my green contacts but quickly got too lazy to keep putting those pesky things in my eyes every day. I quickly quit wearing them and went back to just wearing my glasses when I drove. I'm nearsighted and only needed them to see the board and when I drove.

I noticed in my late teen years that my eyes were starting to get some green flecks in them that became more pronounced when I wore something green or with hints of green in it.

After I had light of my life, I noticed that the green flecks were more pronounced than ever before. Almost everything I wore enhanced the "greenness" of my eyes.

A few months ago, I was putting in my contacts (I went back to contacts about 5 years ago but only the regular kind, no colored contacts) and I actually looked at my eye. Not just looking so I make sure that I get the contact on my eyeball, but really looked.

To my surprise, my eyes are now green. Not kelly green like my contacts when I was 16, but green nevertheless.

My neighbor, L, even noticed. He asked if I wore contacts and I said that I did. He asked if they were colored and I said no. That's when he said he noticed that my eyes were green.

So it's not all in my head. I got my mom to check just for more verification (I'm horrible about taking things on faith, I have to check and re-check and re-check again).

OMG, I literally willed my eyes to turn green. Who knew that 14 years ago when I was praying and wishing for my eyes to turn green, that it would happen?!?!?

I AM OMNIPOTENT. I COMMAND THE SUN TO RISE IN THE MORNING AND THE MOON TO RISE IN THE EVENING!!! HA HA HA HA HA!!! (that's my evil laugh.....just think of the Wicked Witch of the West when you're reading this part).

So cool.

P.S. Per the "oh so mighty" Internet, my eye color change is a result of old age, sun exposure or disease......the Internet sucks.

Coolest Thing Ever....

....well maybe not ever, but pretty freaking cool.

It's totally snowing right now!!!!!

I live in the deep south and it rarely, if ever, snows here. I haven't seen snow since I went to visit Tracey up in RI. Light of my life has never seen it. I hope it's snowing at the house.

I'm going around with a big friggin' smile on my face. Nobody else seems excited by this.

How come adults don't get excited about this kind of stuff anymore? I'm not talking about Yankees since they have a legitimate reason to hate snow. But I'm talking about when something like this happens that's rare.

I totally feel like a little kid right now. I want it to stick so I can make snow cream and make a snow angel and a snow man and have a snowball fight. I've only done that twice in my life. Once when I was a kid and it unexpectedly snowed enough to coat the yard with about a foot of snow and another time when I was on a school trip to New York.

Man, this is soooooo cool.

Cool Lecture/Speech

I was doing my daily read of Perez Hilton and he was talking about this whole Patrick Swayze cancer thing. He had a link to a You Tube video that blew me away.

Here's the link. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ji5_MqicxSo

If it doesn't work, go to You Tube and look for Randy Pausch Lecture: Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams.

Makes me want to go back to school and get a degree in anything so I can get hired on with Disney and do something grand.

I've been listening to it all afternoon. It's wonderful.

Weird News-Tearless Onions

They're developing an onion that doesn't make you cry.

There's this vegetable geneticist that's trying to prevent diseases from occurring in onions and during the course of their manipulations, they discovered that they can block the gene that mixes with another gene in the onion that causes tears when you cut it up.

Apparently (this is new to me), there are two genes that, separate, don't cause a reaction. However, whenever you cut into the onion, the two genes mix and this causes the enzyme to make you cry.

Here's a quote by Dr. Colin Eady:

"“Through RNAi, genes can be specifically shut down or turned off. By shutting down the lachrymatory factor synthase gene, we have stopped valuable sulphur compounds being converted to the tearing agent, and instead made them available for redirection into compounds, some of which are known for their flavour and health properties.”"

In plain English (not plain smack), by blocking the LFS gene, they can let the sulphur in onion get redirected to help out the flavor and health properties of the onion.

When I first heard this bit of news yesterday on NPR (yes, I listen to NPR, shut up), I was astonished. I thought, "how incredibly lazy and weak are humans to want to genetically alter onions so you won't cry for that whole 5 minutes when cutting up onions" but then when I read that it's not being done for that reason but for helping out the health properties, I changed my mind. It's just a good side effect of the genetics altering.

However, that brings up the question of genetics altering in the first place. I've been hearing on the peripheral of genetics altering in vegetables and animals. As a whole, it freaks me out. When they start breaking down why they're doing it, it kinda makes sense. However, overall, I'm a "don't mess with Mother Nature" kinda gal.

Makes you think.
