If The Saxons Can Do It, Why Can't We?

Catchy title, huh. I've been thinking on that one for a while now.

I know, I know. You're thinking to yourself, "WTF?".

I have a point, I swear.

It's.....

...wait a second, I know it.

Give me a minute.

Oh, gotcha.

I was taking a shower the other day and came to the realization that I only shower every other day.

And then, that got me started on what's the norm when it comes to showers.

What is the norm?

My ex husband used to shower daily. Despite the fact that the the only hair he had on his body was a short high and tight and whatever was in his pants.

He didn't smell if he went a day without one. In fact, to my neanderthal nose, he smelled good. All warm and toasty and male.

And then that reminded me of an incident that we had an argument over.

I still say I was right.

I was about 7 months pregnant and we were finishing up the painting of the interior walls of the house in almost every room. While in the middle of painting our room, I realized that we needed something else from Home Depot and asked him if he would go and buy it so we could finish that day.

He said sure and then proceeded to say he was just gonna grab a quick shower before heading over to the HOME DEPOT.

You know, where's it's practically mandatory to have something paint stained or ripped or dust covered in order to just gain entry.

He was going to take a shower to go to Home Depot just to grab something real quick in order to finish up PAINTING when he got back.

Seriously stupid. For real. Right?

We actually argued over this for like 15 minutes. In the end, he showered and came back and by the time he came back, my pregnant ass was all ensconced in the couch with a pint of chocolate ice cream. No way was I getting back up. I made him finish it all on his own.

Now, the whole showering every other day thing is what I grew up doing. I'm not trying to jump on the "green" bandwagon by saving water, but it did make me realize that that is exactly what I was doing.

And then it got me to thinking about what else I do and I quickly realized, not much. But I'm working on resolving that.

My aunt, however, has been "green" all her life. However, it's really not "green". It's just the way she grew up.

She reuses plastic containers until they're falling apart. She washes out Ziploc bags and dries them to use them again. They have a compost pile. She finds uses for almost every kind of packaging. She recycles bows from presents and if the paper is large enough, she'll smooth out and save wrapping paper. She'll take leftovers and mix them up or fry them up or smashes them up to make a new dish.

Those are just some small examples of what she does.

Now, I know this sounds extreme, but really, I've actually read where people do this in an effort to conserve and to recycle.

Where am I going with all this?

No clue.

I just thought it was a neat title and didn't want to waste it.

Oh, and the Saxons reference? That's just because I've been reading "The Mists of Avalon" and they talk about the enemy Saxons. And I just watched "King Arthur" with Kiera and Clive and the Saxons are in there and were extremely dirty compared to Clive and company.

What are your showering habits? Do you look down on people that go a day without showering? Are you obsessive over cleanliness?

I don't wash my hair everyday, but I do shower daily. Sometimes twice a day. I find that the older I get, the more sensitive I am to odor. Weird, huh?

unmitigated me

I am an every-other-day-person by necessity. Otherwise I dry up and blow away.

Diane

eh depends... in the summer i could take 3 showers a day sometimes. i only wash my hair usually twice a week, so the rest of the time i get to take super relax-y bubble baths! i do that most everynight. but getting clean isn't the main reason. it's the aaahhhhhhh factor. :)

Rhea

Right now, at my first week of training in my new job, I'm showering DAILY. I'm only washing my hair every other day though, because it's a pain to dry and curl and make look nice...which I'm trying to do as much as possible before my bosses realize I have CRAZY hair.

But, my natural state of being is to shower every other day or so.

I don't look down on people that don't shower every single day. If I can't smell ya, then you're fine. lol However... I am really wierd about showering. I HAVE to shower and wash my hair everyday or I FEEL gross even if I just sat on the couch all day watching tv. There have been days where I've taken 2 showers in a day because I felt gross. Yea.. I'm totally the opposite of green! lol....

"'Ow do you know 'e's the king?"
"'E's the only one that doesn't got shit all over 'im!"

I want to be the king! Actually, regardless of royal status, I don't want to have shit all over me. Ever.

Beyond that, I take a shower every day more out of habit. I don't insist that everyone do; seems to me there is a reasonable level of cleanliness that doesn't require being too fastidious.

I'm with your aunt on the leftovers thing. I try and do that, you can end up with some good eats, fo' shizzle!

And how are you today? :)

(love the title)

I shower every day, but I usually work out most days too.

Jess

I shower every day, unless it is the weekend and then I have been known to bask in my filth. I can't get all THAT nasty laying on the couch, right? :)

I don't care how often you shower, just as long as you don't stinky up my space, we are straight!

rachael chatoor

I shower every day, just because I love to stand under the hot water and sing.

I dont think I would make a special effort to shower just for Home Depot though. Especially if I was just coming right back home to do some house or garden work ( ie get dirty and sweaty )

Anonymous

I shower every day. I usually work out, but even on the days I don't, I like a shower.

Lo

you're readin the mists of avalon??????

okay. i officially welcome you into my inner circle. that book is legendary. sigh.

i shower every other day. and if i can get away with it, i'll shower every other two days. NOT GROSS cuz i'm clean. i'm a clean person. and i also don't wash my jeans every time i wear them, (ruins the wash on them) and i also don't wash my work clothes every time. i change into sweats immediately when iget home. i DO wash my face, hands and feet every day... more than once.

i never even thought about it as 'going green.' i just thought about it as, i'm clean, and i'm lazy. what of it?

Teri

I shower every day, sometimes twice if I got to the gym. I only wash my hair about twice a week because it turns into a gigantic afro. I love me some afro, but this ain't a purty one. I reuse plastic grocery bags in the little trash cans around the house. I use scrap paper for notes and stuff. I hate to waste, but I have learned that it is okay to throw/give away stuff instead of just letting it sit around and take up space. (Have I mentioned how I love organizing stuff??)

My husband won't even answer the door for the mailman if he hasn't had his shower yet. I answer it in my pj's. I don't care.

When I was a kid it was every other day. That's what my kids do too. I don't think it's to be green though. It's cause I'm lazy. Even though they pretty much bath themselves now I still have to run the water for them and that takes...not a lot of time, but still.

I HAVE to take a shower everyday.

But here's the weird thing. If I haven't showered yet I will go out in sweats and a pony tail no prob. But, if I've showered I have to get dressed and do my hair and stuff before I'll go in public. Why? Dunno.

I shower daily. It wakes me up in the morning. Otherwise I'm in a fog all day. If I get a workout in late in the day then I need a second shower, but I usually try to workout in the morning before my shower.

sassy stephanie

Hey, when peeps grew up in hard times, they did what they had to do.

My hubby's grandmother used to take adding machine tape and roll it up so her accountant husband could use the other side.

Captain Dumbass

I need my morning shower to function properly. Shower and coffee. I'm not quite human if I don't have those two.

Pseudo

I live in the tropics. We tend to take 2-4 showers a day... it would be pretty ripe smelling here otherwise.

BTW I've got an award for you at my place.

Sarah's Blogtastic Adventures

My boyfriend is like your ex. He showers to run to Walmart?! Where I am sure 99% of the population there has never taken a shower. I am a shower girl, but then I work out everyday too so I would be pretty stank if I didnt. : )

Jennifer and Sandi

I shower every day. Wash my hair daily but I do go in spurts where I do the every other day w/the hair.

Swirl Girl

Hubby plays softball at night. Showers when he gets home...that I get, right? Then, sleeps and showers again when he wakes up at 6:00...that I don't get.

I shower every day -usually. But I don't shave my legs but every other day (or three)

Delena

I had to laugh when I read your post. My husband does the exact same thing, he showers before he goes to Home Depot. He is a clean freak which is good because he always smells super clean and he uses old spice which is old fashion I know but it is so manly. I am a bath person myself.

I shower every day - occasionally I will skip a Sat or Sun if we really aren't leaving the house or doing anything, but usually both those days also. I wash my hair every 2-3 days though - I love that I don't have oily hair so I can get away with it. How would I keep up my shaving routine if I didn't shower daily? :)

Rich, however, unless we are going out somewhere nice (how often is that) will regularly go from Friday morning to Monday morning without showering.

derfina

Daily when the Unit is home, every other day when he isn't, unless I NEED to.

Anonymous

I shower every morning. Well, unless it's Sunday, then it's likely I don't shower until afternoon. Early afternoon.

I'll shower in the evening, before bed, too, if Beloved's getting that look in his eye that says it's been waaaaaaay too long between play dates.

ChurchPunkMom

I'm totally an every other day gal. ;) and those awesome new profile pics? I took them today... I showered yesterday.

J showers nearly everyday.. and yeah.. lacking body hair (he has more on his face than anywhere else..), yummy man smell... I'm so with you on all that..

LiteralDan

I shower every day because I look like a greasy sleazeball if I don't. I'm not sure why my hair gets so shiny and clumpy like 27 hours after a shower, but it just does.

I've even tried pushing past it to see if it gets better ("naturally conditioned" or something), but no dice.

I'd miss the hot steam that clears up my sinuses if I didn't shower every day.

I would not shower just to go to Home Depot, however, even if they hired away a bunch of cashiers from Victoria's Secret.

Mariah

Shit-I'm lucky to get a shower in twice a week, we have a lot of people living here... and only two showers. And teenagers! Teenage boys take a lot of showers, I think they "play" in there...

Anonymous

Every other day. I do love to relax and read in a deep bubble bath. My husband however is crazed about clean. He showers every morning and then after every "king of the throne" session. His potty and showering rituals are quite time consuming. He does smell good though.

Lula!

I love you and your pregnant, chocolate ice cream-eating, ass ensconced on the couch self. This was brilliant!

I showered today...for the first time since Monday. Yeah, I admit it. I got a CT scan with my grimy, smelly self...on Tuesday. So what of it? Ha!
